What We Do

Going to Romania Changes You

Going to Romania changes you! I, being sixteen, have gone twice, and both times a piece of my heart has stayed there. The love that these children show is incredible! We go to give to them, but they give just as much back to us.

Still in Awe

I am still in AWE of how God has blessed me, by calling me on this ACF Mission trip!  I never could've imagined the outpouring of Love, given so freely and so generously by these beautiful children!  So humbled and grateful I am, that our hearts are bound together forever in the Love of Christ!  This experience has opened my eyes, and certainly has changed my life!

Guided by One Mission

ACF takes teams of people from all walks of life, guided by one mission. God works miracles through those teams, and their lives are never the same.

I Felt Part of the Transformational Process

ACF provides an opportunity for Christians to be a part of the transformational process. Since ACF works in the same community year after year they are able to track the development and discipleship of the community. ACF goes deep in the lives of the children and families.

Feeling God’s Love

I believe the children feel God's love through the people who go on the mission trips. I felt a joy in so many of the kids as they learned the bible verses or listened to the stories. ACF makes that joy possible by giving volunteers the opportunity to go and help in this ministry. I never would have thought I could go on something like this!

I traveled with ACF 3 times to Romania. Each year was different, but each had a life changing effect on me. It is humbling to be the hands and feet of Jesus and see the need for love is heartbreaking. The trips are well organized, the accommodations were very comfortable, and I always felt safe. That's important when in a foreign country.

ACF & What We Do

All of our programs have Biblical teaching as their cornerstone. Through our programs we are striving to see poverty decrease and the standard of living increase. We are hoping more and more families can remain families and less children will become social orphans. We strive to strengthen the family unit and the educational abilities of their children in a holistic and Biblical manner.

Preschool Program

The rampant poverty, school drop out rates and lack of employment were enough to drive Another Child Foundation and Buckner Romania to do something. We decided many years ago to start with the youngest children and try to change their futures and the future of their families through education. We began by offering early intervention through our preschool program. Most of our children’s parents have little or no education themselves, which meant the Roma children would enter the Romanian schools already behind. This made it difficult for the Roma children to learn and compete with other Romanian children and forced many to drop out. Our preschool program allows our students to enter the Romanian schools with an educational foundation built on hands on experiences and lessons taught by qualified and loving teachers. New preschoolers are enrolled in to the preschool program every school year.

As these children got older, we knew that we didn’t want to stop serving them, so the after school program was born. The after school program was created to offer homework help to our students when they entered the Romanian primary school (grades 1-4), which meets for classes in the morning. We knew that most of the parents would be unable to help their children with their homework and we wanted to see the children continue to grow and succeed. Skilled teachers meet with these students each day after school to work on homework, other lessons, and special projects.

After School Program

Before School Program

The students we began serving years ago in our preschool program continued to grow and began entering “Gymnasium” (grades 5-8), which meets for classes in the Romanian schools in the afternoon/evening. Again, we wanted to help these students in any way we could, so the before school program began. Our teachers meet with these students to help them with homework and projects, as well as re-teaching concepts before they go to the Romanian school each day. This program ensures that students have the greatest chance of doing well on their National Test at the end of their 8th grade year. Students must pass this test to be able to go to high school. The student’s marks on this test determine the quality of high school he can be enrolled in.

We understand that not all of our students will go on to higher education, but we also know that they will need to have some kind of skill to be able to get a job. With this knowledge our Life Skills program was created. Students get the chance to learn about sewing, cooking and woodworking in our brand new Life Skills classrooms. These skills will help them in everyday life, as well as give them experience for future employment. Our teachers and volunteers help to teach these skills to our oldest students at the Point of Hope.

Life Skills Program

Motivate and Performance Program

The Motivate and Performance program serves older children who do not attend the Point of Hope’s programs. This is a scholarship program that at-risk and orphaned teenagers can apply to. We currently support 27 students who have created a plan and have taken the initiative to better themselves. For example, we have students who have used their scholarship to go to cosmetology school. Many students in Romania have ambitions, but have no way of achieving their ambitions due to poverty, which is a big reason why the cycle of poverty continues. These Motivate and Performance scholarships are designed to give these students the step up they need to achieve their dreams by simply helping them get the training they need.

Our women’s ministry began several years ago when we realized that we wanted to equip and serve the entire family. Many of our students’ fathers work abroad, so we started reaching out to the mothers and grandmothers. This ministry includes monthly meetings, as well as other special events. Topics such as self-worth, parenting, and relationships are covered, as well as teaching them new crafts, recipes and hygiene techniques. We have seen lots of growth in these women and have watched their community strengthen.
